Summary
The restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a com‑
mon cause of disturbed sleep, and may have a marked effect on the patient´s
quality of life and mental health. Although the aetiology of the condition is
still not fully understood, the dopaminergic system, iron metabolism and the opioidergic system appear to have a major role to play. While levodopa and
dopamine agonists represent the treatment of choice, anticonvulsants and opi‑
oidergic drugs are also employed. Before, during and after anaesthesia a number of particulars need to be considered, and these are discussed in this article.
