Die Doktrin über den Zusammenhang zwischen intrakraniellem Volumen und Druck besteht seit nunmehr 200 Jahren. Formuliert wurde sie erstmals von den beiden schottischen Ärzten Alexander Monro Secundus und George Kellie, bestätigt und endgültig publik gemacht durch den ebenfalls schottischen Chirurgen John Abercrombie.
Trotz ihrer Bekanntheit erstaunt es, dass die Namen der beiden Begründer der Doktrin immer wieder orthografisch fehlerhaft genannt werden und die Originalliteratur, wahrscheinlich aufgrund ihres Alters und der dadurch erschwerten Auffindbarkeit, in aktuellen Publikationen wenig Beachtung findet. Ein weiterer Grund könnte auch die in den Einreichungs-Richtlinien einiger wissenschaftlicher Journale enthaltene Forderung sein, nur aktuelle Literatur zu zitieren.
The doctrine of the relationship between intracranial volume and pressure was enunciated 200 years ago by the two Scottish physicians Alexander Monro Secundus and George Kellie. It was confirmed and finally made public by the Scottish surgeon John Abercrombie.
Despite their notoriety, it is surprising that the names of the two founders of the doctrine have been repeatedly incorrectly cited (“Monroe” instead of Monro, “Kelly” instead of Kellie) and that the original literature published in 1783 and 1824 receives little attention in current publications. Reasons for this deficiency in the citation of names may be that the age of the original texts makes it difficult to retrieve them, and possibly also the fact that the author guidelines of some scientific journals require the cited literature to be up-to-date.
