Summary
Although intensive care units (ICU) account for less than 10% of the total number of beds in most hospitals, about 20% of all nosocomial infections are acquired in an ICU. ICU-acquired infections account for substantial morbidity and mortality. Nosocomial infections and sepsis are the leading cause of death in non-cardiac ICUs. Most important nosocomial infections in the ICU are catheter-related bloodstream infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia. Standard precautions and special methods are necessary to prevent nosocomial ICU infections.
