Summary Summary: Since 1999, soldiers of the Bundeswehr (German Federal Armed Forces) have been stationed in Kosovo to support the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR). Military medical units are responsible for providing medical care to the deployed soldiers. Within the area of responsibility of the Multinational Brigade Southwest, this mission is accomplished–jointly with medical units from other nations – by the German "Sanitätseinsatzverband" that operates the field hospital in Prizren. In this facility, about 20 physi-cians of different medical specialties provide emergen-cy medical care as well as ambulatory and in-patient treatment to soldiers, UN personnel and members of non-governmental organizations in the area of respon-sibility of the brigade. Unlike at home, the main task for anaesthesiology and surgery are not elective proce-dures.In the theatre, the readiness for the stabilization of patients and for emergency procedures needs to be maintained at all times under deployment conditions.
